The island is a nation on the island of Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. The western third of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are occupied by two countries. Both by area and population, the Island is the second largest Caribbean nation (after Cuba), with 48,442 km² and an estimated 10 million people.
First inhabited by the Taino Indians, it was the first land Christopher Columbus set foot on when he discovered America, calling it "The most beautiful land any eyes had ever seen"( Columbus Diary, October 12th 1492). Nowadays the main tourist destination for all-inclusive tourism from Europe and North America, the island has seen a lot of change in the past 20 years, with very high investment levels on real estate and large scale projects throughout the island.
